Postdoctoral Researcher in Systematic Biology at Uppsala University
Do you want to work with systematic biology, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee engagement and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
At the Department of Organism Biology, we conduct teaching and research on evolution, development, and function at the organism level. We also study the deepest branches of the tree of life using bioinformatics and experimental molecular techniques. Research on how anthropogenic chemicals interact with cell functions and lead to long-term health effects on humans and animals is also conducted. For more information, see www.iob.uu.se (http://www.iob.uu.se).
We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher for Aaron Vogan's group. The group focuses on understanding genome evolution and the genetic basis for adaptation in fungi. We recently discovered that many fungi have massive mobile genetic elements, called Starships, that mobilize a wide diversity of fungal genes. We have now been able to decipher how Starships move between genomes. The main goal of the position is to demonstrate the horizontal transfer of Starships between different fungi in a laboratory environment. This will be done using genetically modified model strains so that successful transfers can be screened with a high throughput on selective media.
Responsibilities
You will primarily work in the wet laboratory. The focus will be on transformations of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus and potentially related species. This will also include vector construction using yeast and/or bacterial transformations. Methods may also include CRISPR/Cas9. You are expected to analyze the data generated, including a certain amount of bioinformatics work. The applicant is expected to communicate their findings both at international conferences and by writing scientific articles for publication.
The planned methodology will include established genetic transformation techniques, such as PCR, primer design, bacterial cloning, yeast cloning, and transformations of filamentous fungi. Additionally, fungal cultivation will be performed with various media and growth conditions.
Qualifications
A PhD in molecular biology/evolutionary biology or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in biology. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years should apply. In calculating the three-year timeframe, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc. The applicant must have documented experience and proficiency in both oral and written presentation in English. The ability to present data and perform statistical analyses is a requirement.
Microbial cultivation of fungi and fungal transformations are meritorious. Experience with Aspergillus fumigatus is particularly desirable. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as organizational skills, problem-solving strength, communication, and collaboration.
About the Position
The position is temporary for 2 years according to the central collective agreement. The scope is full-time. Start date is 2025-05-01 or by agreement. Place of employment: Uppsala
